PRODUCT DETAILS

Dimensions: 120mm x 100mm.

This product is handmade, variations are to be expected and add to its uniqueness.

Each Soraa glass piece is a practice of patience. It follows the lost-wax casting technique which has been around for thousands of years. To create a glass equivalent, the original shell is encased in a silicone rubber to form a master imprint. This is the first mold.

Microcrystaline wax is then poured into the silicone mold to create wax replicas. Each wax replica is fettled by hand to smooth out any imperfections before being encased into a second mold, this time made from plaster and silica.

Next, the wax is gently steamed out of the plaster mold to create a hollow positive form inside. Once dry, the mold is placed into the kiln with the opening side facing up. On top sits a terracotta pot filled with the correct amount of glass, ready to melt into the form of the original shell imprint.

After waiting a couple of days for the glass to anneal, it is finally cool enough to come out of the kiln. The softened plaster mold is broken away to reveal the glass piece inside and if all has gone well, there is a simple polish to smooth out the base and the final touch of a signature.

Meet the maker

Soraa Glass

Auckland, New Zealand

Soraa Glass is the creation of Korean born, Tāmaki Makaurau based designer Jark Pane. Influenced from her multi-disciplinary background spanning between landscape architecture, spatial, graphic design and classical music, the notion of the feminine form within spaces is explored through the delicate yet striking presence of glass. Jark began exploring blown glass when Lukeke visited Italy in 2017. The team was taught a masterclass by Maestro Davide Fuin in Murano and studied the works of renowned Venetian glass blowing artists during their time in Venice & Florence. Although she is more familiar with the process of lost wax casting, Jark continues to explore blown forms by designing mini-series that she has begun to show alongside her cast glass. Soraa Glass pieces celebrate the intimate relationship between time and light through thoughtfully sculpted forever pieces - an ode to the salty landscapes of Aotearoa.
