The ultimate gift - it doesn't get much better than this. This chess set began as a personal project in 2016 with the aim for maker Tim Grocott to learn new techniques in modelling and mould making. Each piece began as a hand-sculpted model, moulded and cast in porcelain before firing, hand sanding and finishing. Extensive historical research was undertaken in order to inform the design of the set. The pieces pay homage to the game’s long history which dates back to before the 6th century. Please note, each set is made to order, please allow 10-12 weeks for delivery. Various colour options are available.

PRODUCT DETAILS

Set Includes: Two sets of pieces (16 pieces per side), board & box.

Materials:

  • Chess pieces made from pure (or colour tinted) porcelain clay, filled and finished with a cork base.
  • Chess Box available in solid walnut finished with a brass Taus cup emblem. A high density foam insert holds the pieces inside.
  • Chess boards made from etched leather, mounted to ply, edged in solid wood and finished underneath with cork.

Dimensions: Board 400 x 400mm and the tallest piece is 100mm.

Each box set comes with an information card including year of production, edition number and signed personally by the maker.  

A functional work of art - to be both admired and played for years to come.

Tim Grocott works from his home studio in Te Atatu Peninsula Auckland, turning raw clay into fine ceramics.
